Omaha Hi - Basic Beginner Strategy

Omaha is one of the most popular poker variants. It’s similar to Texas Hold’em, and so Omaha Hi strategy mirrors that of its sister poker genre.

Omaha Hi might be a late arrival on the poker scene – dating back to the early 1970s – however, it’s popularity has grown by leaps and bounds.

Unlike Hold’em, in Omaha Hi, each player is dealt a total of 4 face-down hole cards. However, players must only use 2 of those 4 cards, along with 3 of the 5 community cards, to form their hand.

With so many combinations flying about, it’s extremely important that newbie players learn which hands have promise and which ones are junk.

Omaha Hi Top Poker Strategy Tips

For beginners, the most difficult part is knowing where to start with Omaha Hi strategy. Here – we’ll make it simple for you.

The following basic tips should put you on the right path to start playing Omaha Hi games:

  • You can and must use only two of your hole cards to form the best poker hand.
  • The average winning hand in Omaha is a lot stronger than in Hold’em. Top Pair usually won’t be good enough on the river.
  • Starting hands that include Aces or Kings are good. However, they are much stronger when double-suited or connected so that they can make nut flushes and straights.
  • Omaha-Hi is a game of draws, which you should bet! This play is also known as betting on the come.
  • Also, recognising that you have a draw isn’t enough. You should also learn which draws can win at showdown and which will be vulnerable to being outdrawn.

Bear in mind that, unlike Hold'em, the thrill of this game is in making a draw. And, as practice makes perfect, Pacific Poker is happy to join newbies on their Omaha Hi journey.
